Information about MADRID Madrid is the capital of Spain and is located in the heart of the peninsula with a population of over 3 million people. As the capital city, Madrid is the business centre and headquarters for the government, Parliament and Spanish Royal Family. The origins of the modern city come from the 9th century, when Muhammad I ordered the construction of a small palace in the same place that is today occupied today by the Palacio Real. Around this palace a small citadel, al-Mudaina, was built. Near that palace was the Manzanares river, which the Arabs called al-Majrit ("source of water"). From this came the naming of the site as Majerit, which later evolved into the modern-day spelling of Madrid. Later it became the subject of a dispute between the Christians and Arabs until it was conquered by Alonso VI in the 11th century in his advance towards Toledo. He reconsecrated the mosque as the church of the Virgin of Almudena. In 1329, the Cortes Generales first assembled in the city to advise Alfonso XI of Castile. Sephardi Jews and Moors continued to live in the city until they were expelled at the end of the 15th century. During the 18th century, under the reign of Carlos(Charles) III, the great arteries of the city, such as the Paseo del Prado and Paseo las Acacias were designed. At the beginning of the 19th century the commercial street known as the Gran Vía was built as an east-west avenue. In the 1950's the north-south boulevard called Paseo de la Castellana was extended and modern buildings were erected, housing the major financial institutions. Most of Madrid's industry is located in the Southern fringe of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are clustered. Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity and very lively nightlife.
